Interactions between Codeine and Dextromethorphan

Combining codeine and dextromethorphan can lead to a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms may include confusion, hallucinations, seizures, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can even result in coma or death. If you experience any of these symptoms during treatment, contact your doctor immediately. Additionally, combining these medications may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. Avoid or limit alcohol use while being treated with these medications and do not operate hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Inform your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first consulting your doctor.
